Im Karst
“Walk over the Karst, over the still pastures, under the silent Scots pines and listen. (...) There is a message about life in the rocks: Whether this life was bitter or lonely; it was."
On the islands of Cres and Lošinj, in the Croatian Karst region, nature’s law reigns and the inhabitants have to fight hard for their survival. This is a sparse landscape of limestone that has been eroded by rainwater. The film takes a detailed look into the land and people of this region over the 4 seasons. From the unbearably hot and dry summer to the freezing winds of winter the peasants sheep wander over the large, dry and rocky plateaus with their sage fields.
Only a few old peasants remain on the islands, working the fields, making wine or farming their sheep. The young people have chosen the commodities of modern life on the mainland instead of this poor, austere life.
We listen to the old peasants and fishermen who have retained a particular form of independence. They tell us about their natural and archaic lifestyle which, like the landscape around, is threatened with disappearance. Anyway nature will take over soon…
