RUINS

West Berlin, caught between the tumult of the late 1970s and the fall of the Wall: The cult bar "Ruine" ('the ruin') continues to attract the ’68 generation, anarchists, artists, criminals, and bohemians alike. Amid this chaotic mix, painter Jo Schmejkal works as a bartender. While he dives deep into the underground scene, a string of eccentric bars emerges around Ruine’s owner. One of these bars even becomes the center of a press scandal, sparked by leftist author Willi Gettél, active in the orbit of the APO, and painter-journalist Horst-Dieter Keitel. Meanwhile, video artist Knut Hoffmeister captures glimpses of the scene on his Super-8 camera.

In "Ruins", four artists share their wild and vivid memories of this unique bar scene. Their stories are interwoven with Super-8 video art from the era, footage from "Sender Freies Berlin", their personal archives, and accompanied by original tracks from bands of the period.
